Rehabilitation centres are treatment institutions where clients go for help with challenges that have disrupted their ability to function normally. Mental health (psychiatric) rehabilitation is structured, and how long it lasts depends on how severe the client's condition is.
People with chronic mental health conditions who have lost some of their daily functioning can be helped in rehab to build independence and return to their communities. Sometimes medical treatment is critical to stabilise a mental health crisis; rehabilitation and counselling then help the person rebuild the life they want.
So, do rehabs help?
It depends on the person. At Tredela CMRC we have come across studies suggesting rehab does not always work. Rehab aims to restore independence, improve social and vocational skills, strengthen illness management and support community integration. If a client and the people around them can work with an experienced psychologist and psychiatrist, rehab may not be necessary.
